  • Ban or kick a player instantly.
  • Save the server with the server.save command.
  • Change variables on the fly (gather rate, in-game time zone).
  • Schedule restarts and automatic announcements.

Always protect your RCON password: a compromised RCON access gives full control over the server.

Managing wipes properly

The wipe is the reset of the map, and sometimes of player data (blueprints). It is a central ritual in Rust. Good wipe management keeps your community loyal:

  • Map wipe: generate a new seed to renew exploration, generally every week or every two weeks.
  • Full wipe (map + blueprints): rarer, often monthly, to put everyone back on equal footing.
  • Communicate in advance: announce the wipe date and time on Discord so players can organize.
  • Automate with a scheduled wipe plugin so you forget nothing and guarantee consistency.

Consistency is the key: a predictable wipe schedule reassures players and structures your server's life.

Updating Oxide after a forced wipe

Rust receives a major update on the first Thursday of each month, and this patch forces a map wipe while often breaking plugin compatibility. It is the appointment no administrator should miss. After each monthly update, follow this routine: update the server, update Oxide/uMod to the latest version, then check each plugin in the console. A plugin that fails to load displays a clear error: you will need to wait for its author's update or temporarily disable it. Testing on patch Thursday avoids nasty surprises on the weekend, when your players are most numerous.

Configuring your plugins properly

Installing a plugin is only the first step: most are configured via files in oxide/config. Take the time to open these JSON files to adjust permissions, cooldowns and default values. Oxide's permission system is powerful: you can grant access to certain plugins only to your VIPs or your moderation team using groups. For example, reserve Vanish and AdminRadar for the admin group, and offer upgraded kits to the VIP group. A careful configuration turns a simple list of plugins into a coherent, balanced experience.

Monitoring performance

Rust is one of the most resource-intensive games. Each plugin adds a load, and some poorly optimized ones can drop the server's FPS. Regularly monitor your server's health and do not hesitate to remove rarely used plugins. A smooth Rust server relies on a balance: enough plugins to offer content, but not to the point of saturating the processor.
