A bare Rust server is functional, but it is Oxide (now known as uMod) that transforms it into a rich, customized experience. This modding platform opens the door to thousands of plugins. Here is how to install Oxide, the 12 plugins we recommend and our tips for managing RCON and wipes.
Installing Oxide / uMod
Oxide replaces the standard game engine with a modded version that automatically loads your plugins. Installation comes down to a few steps:
- Download the latest version of Oxide/uMod compatible with your version of Rust.
- Extract the files to the server root, overwriting the existing files.
- Restart the server: an oxide folder appears, containing the plugins, config and data subfolders.
- Drop your plugins (.cs) into the oxide/plugins folder; they load hot, without a restart.
On managed hosting, these operations are often done in one click from the panel, avoiding any risky file handling.
The 12 essential plugins
Here is our selection of proven plugins covering quality of life, administration and player comfort:
- 1. Rust Kits: distribute starter or VIP kits to players.
- 2. ZLevels Remastered: adds a much-appreciated skill leveling system (gathering, crafting).
- 3. Vanish: essential for moderation, it makes admins invisible.
- 4. AdminRadar: detects players, crates and entities to track cheaters.
- 5. Friends or Clans: manages friend groups and shared protections.
- 6. RemoverTool: lets players cleanly destroy their own builds.
- 7. BGrade: automatically upgrades walls to the chosen material level.
- 8. StackSizeController: adjusts item stack sizes to streamline the inventory.
- 9. Economics + ServerRewards: sets up an economy and an in-game shop.
- 10. Better Loot: rebalances crate contents according to your vision for the server.
- 11. AutoBroadcast: broadcasts recurring informational messages.
- 12. Discord Logger: relays important events (kills, bans, connections) to your Discord.
Start small: install a few plugins, check stability, then gradually expand. A server overloaded with plugins becomes difficult to maintain and can lose performance.
Mastering RCON
RCON (Remote Console) is your control tower. It lets you send commands remotely, monitor the server and administer it without being connected in-game. You can use it via tools like RustAdmin or directly from your host's panel. A few key uses:
- Ban or kick a player instantly.
- Save the server with the server.save command.
- Change variables on the fly (gather rate, in-game time zone).
- Schedule restarts and automatic announcements.
Always protect your RCON password: a compromised RCON access gives full control over the server.
Managing wipes properly
The wipe is the reset of the map, and sometimes of player data (blueprints). It is a central ritual in Rust. Good wipe management keeps your community loyal:
- Map wipe: generate a new seed to renew exploration, generally every week or every two weeks.
- Full wipe (map + blueprints): rarer, often monthly, to put everyone back on equal footing.
- Communicate in advance: announce the wipe date and time on Discord so players can organize.
- Automate with a scheduled wipe plugin so you forget nothing and guarantee consistency.
Consistency is the key: a predictable wipe schedule reassures players and structures your server's life.
Updating Oxide after a forced wipe
Rust receives a major update on the first Thursday of each month, and this patch forces a map wipe while often breaking plugin compatibility. It is the appointment no administrator should miss. After each monthly update, follow this routine: update the server, update Oxide/uMod to the latest version, then check each plugin in the console. A plugin that fails to load displays a clear error: you will need to wait for its author's update or temporarily disable it. Testing on patch Thursday avoids nasty surprises on the weekend, when your players are most numerous.
Configuring your plugins properly
Installing a plugin is only the first step: most are configured via files in oxide/config. Take the time to open these JSON files to adjust permissions, cooldowns and default values. Oxide's permission system is powerful: you can grant access to certain plugins only to your VIPs or your moderation team using groups. For example, reserve Vanish and AdminRadar for the admin group, and offer upgraded kits to the VIP group. A careful configuration turns a simple list of plugins into a coherent, balanced experience.
Monitoring performance
Rust is one of the most resource-intensive games. Each plugin adds a load, and some poorly optimized ones can drop the server's FPS. Regularly monitor your server's health and do not hesitate to remove rarely used plugins. A smooth Rust server relies on a balance: enough plugins to offer content, but not to the point of saturating the processor. In case of a performance drop, disable recently added plugins one by one to identify the culprit.
